Preparing for Surgery

A little preparation.
A calmer beginning.

Organize the practical details, prepare your questions, and keep your team’s instructions close.

Explore your checklist

Keep your team informed

Make sure the team has your current health history and a complete list of medications, supplements, allergies, and previous procedures. Let them know about changes in your health or circumstances before surgery.

Ask which assessments or appointments you need before your procedure and when they should be completed. Requirements are individual, so use the list provided by your own surgical team.

Make room for recovery

Discuss the help you may need after your procedure, including transport and support at home. Ask the team what arrangements are required, then coordinate with the people who will be helping you.

Think through work, childcare, pets, meals, and everyday responsibilities. Ask about your likely activity restrictions before making plans. Recovery needs vary, and a general timeline cannot tell you when you personally will be ready to return to each activity.

Review your instructions

Keep your procedure-specific instructions together and read them before surgery day. Ask the team to clarify anything about medications, eating and drinking, arrival time, clothing, or what to bring. Do not change medications based on a general website checklist.

Confirm the procedure location, transport arrangements, follow-up appointments, and the contact method to use for postoperative questions or urgent concerns. If an instruction is unclear or difficult to follow, contact the team before your procedure.
